Overview

Safety and Standard in one net

The AS-Interface system is a simple cabling system for the lower level of industrial communication. An AS-Interface (AS-Interface) network consists of a controller, a so-called master and the associated sensor and actuator components, the slaves.

The AS-Interface Safety at Work System allows safety components to be easily integrated into an AS-Interface network. Safety and standard components work in parallel on the same cable. The AS-Interface master considers the safety slaves like all other slaves and incorporates them into the network. The transmission protocol and the AS-Interface system lines are laid out so that they can also send safety telegrams.

The necessary safety is achieved through an additional protocol between the safe slaves and the safety monitor.

Principle of operation

Any existing system with an AS-Interface system already in operation can be expanded at any time with the safety components. Added to the existing AS-Interface components are a safety monitor and safe slaves that are operated in the same AS-Interface network. The master handles the safety slaves just like any other slave and incorporates them into the network.

The AS-Interface cable is also suitable for transmitting safety-oriented protocols. The safety function is achieved through an additional safety protocol between the safe slaves and the safety monitor. In emergency cases the safety monitor or the safe outputs shut down the related parts of the system.

Safety protocol

Each save input has a specific 8 * 4 bit code table. Through a "teach-in" function the safety monitor or safe output reads in the code tables of the safe inputs projected. During operation permanent comparison of the expected and the transmitted code tables takes place. The system is switched off by the safety monitor or safe output when the expected code is not equal to the transmitted code, i.e. when:

  • a stop is called (0000)
  • the transmitted sequences are wrong
  • communication is interrupted
  • the safe slave is disrupted
  • slave responses are missing or delayed

Code tables

Safe transmission is ensured by using dynamic code tables. The safe slave sends the code table, which is compared with a nominal table in the safety monitor or safe output. If discrepancies or errors are detected, the monitor or safe output shuts down the system.

Building Groups

Building Groups is very easy with the Safety at Work system. The safe components are assigned to different channels in the safety monitor.

Safety monitor

The monitoring component in an AS-Interface system with safety function is the AS-Interface Safety Monitor. The AS-Interface safety monitor monitors the AS-Interface for triggered safety components and represents a replacement for the processing units or fail-safe controllers. This also makes it a cost-effective alternative to traditional safety approaches. To build individual groups, several safety monitor in one system are allowed. For enhanced diagnosis the safe monitor may have an AS-Interface address. Safe outputs monitor a safe input in the safety monitor The normal switch off by the safe outputs is caused by the safety monitor. Manufacturers of such a monitor must be members of the Safety at Work consortium.
